Araya Totoan
A long-established inn spanning 18 generations since the feudal era, with ties to Kitaoji Rosanjin.
This prestigious long-established ryokan has a history spanning 18 generations since the feudal era as an inn where successive lords of the Maeda family once bathed, and it also has ties to Kitaoji Rosanjin. It stands in the Yuno Garuwa district surrounding the old public bathhouse, in the heart of Yamashiro Onsen, one of Kaga Onsenkyo’s leading hot spring areas in Hokuriku.
Its 17 guest rooms come in a variety of styles, including special suites, Japanese-Western rooms with semi-open-air baths, sukiya-style Japanese twin rooms, and detached villas. All are designed to blend traditional Japanese beauty with modern comfort. For example, rooms such as “Wakana” feature Yoshino cypress bathtubs, and some also have two-level baths with a reclining section for a deeply relaxing soak.
The hot spring baths are fed directly from the source of Yamashiro Onsen. With a rich flow of Approx. 100,000 liters per day, guests can enjoy two bath areas, “Rurikou” with the scent of cypress and “Gensenkaku” with a mist effect, with the men’s and women’s baths switched regularly. There is also a special bath called “Karasu-yu,” with two bathing areas at different temperatures, one warm and one hot.
The cuisine makes generous use of local ingredients, including seafood from the Sea of Japan landed at nearby Hashidate Fishing Port, traditional Kaga vegetables, and local specialty fruits. Seasonal dishes can be enjoyed together with carefully selected tableware.
