Shimofuro Onsenkyo Maruhon Ryokan sits in a hot spring town on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, at the northernmost tip of Japan’s main island. Founded in 1887, this long-established inn has been welcoming guests for over 130 years. Its charming old wooden exterior still carries the atmosphere of the days when the town thrived as a hot spring cure destination. The friendly proprietress and staff offer warm hospitality, creating a homelike stay that makes you want to say, “I’m home.”

There are seven guest rooms in total. In classic style, the toilets and washbasins are shared. Rather than luxury, the inn is especially popular with travelers looking for simple warmth and a calm, relaxing space. Many guests return for the comfortable atmosphere. Seasonal dishes made with fresh seafood landed in the waters off Shimokita and locally distinctive cuisine are also part of the appeal.

Another highlight is the free-flowing natural hot spring bath in the semi-basement bathing area. The spring quality is acidic, sulfur-containing sodium chloride and sulfate spring water. The water, carrying the distinctive sulfur scent of Shimofuro Onsen, warms you to the core and is said to keep you warm long after your bath. This is an inn with the classic appeal of a true hot spring retreat, perfect for easing away the fatigue of travel.
