Amami Festival
One of the island’s biggest summer festivals, packed with a wide variety of events.
One of the largest summer festivals on Amami Oshima, it is held every year in Amami City. Over several days, traditional races, fireworks, local performing arts, and more bring lively excitement to locations across the city.
One of the festival’s signature events is the “Funakogi Boat Race,” held at Naze Port. Teams board Amami’s traditional wooden boats and row in powerful unison, creating an impressive spectacle. As the heated race unfolds across the harbor, loud cheers rise from the crowd.
A nighttime highlight is the fireworks display, which vividly lights up both the sky and the sea. Approx. 2,000 fireworks are launched one after another, letting visitors fully enjoy a summer night in the open atmosphere by the waterfront. Another must-see is the “Hachigatsu Odori,” in which island residents dance in a circle to the rhythms of taiko drums and shamisen. Wrapped in its distinctive rhythm, this is a rare chance to experience Amami’s rich culture up close.
There are also parades featuring dance groups and mikoshi portable shrines, along with stage events and many food stalls. As the events vary by day, be sure to check the schedule in advance before heading out.
