Tsutsuga Giant Ginkgo Tree
A golden ginkgo tree with over a thousand years of history.
This massive tree, estimated to be over 1,100 years old, stands on the grounds of Otoshi Shrine in Akiota, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is designated a Natural Monument by the prefecture. The Tsutsuga Giant Ginkgo Tree stands 48 meters tall and has a trunk circumference of 8.2 meters, reflecting the many centuries it has endured.
The tree is typically at its best from late October to mid-November, when its leaves turn from green to vivid yellow and add color to the mountain village in fall. As more leaves fall, they blanket the shrine grounds, creating a scene that resembles a yellow carpet.
The tree may be illuminated at night during the fall foliage season, revealing a different appearance than during the day. The Tsutsuga Furusato Festival is usually held in early November, and the tree is also illuminated during the fall foliage season. Combining the imposing presence of an ancient tree with picturesque fall scenery, it is one of Akiota's best-known natural landscapes.
