Enoshima is approximately 1 hour away from the center of Tokyo. If you wish to maximize your schedule, it is smart to come in the morning, when it’s less crowded with tourists. The morning air is relaxing, and just walking will give you a sense of a “mini-trip”. Make sure to be an early bird if you stay at a hotel on the island, there are fun things waiting exclusively for early birds!

A premium menu in a crowded restaurant is only savored in the morning.

One of the most famous Japanese food restaurants in Enoshima is the “Enoshima Koya”. Appearing numerous times in various media, this restaurant is less crowded in the morning. Usually, it commands a huge line, especially during the weekend. There are two kinds of meals available from 8 am opening to 10:30 am. The speciality, “Splendid Alfonsino Soup Over Raw Egg Rice” is made from soup including Splendid Alfonsino slice, raw egg, soup, pickles, and bonito flakes freshly shaved at each table by restaurant employees. Instead of pouring soy sauce, you pour a delicious soup made from boiling the alfonsino. Taste the rich flavors of bonito flakes. Another speciality is the “Fishermen Soup Meal”, a fish-filled menu with small plates such as Sashimi, and a hearty soup made from fish bones.

The yacht harbor, used in the 1964 and 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the Yacht games has a restaurant serving breakfast. “Cafe Tobiccho Enoshima Yacht Harbor'' has a stylish exterior made of glass. The sunlight shines in the interior, where visitors can taste curry, soup, and pizza made of local seafood.

The speciality is the “Boiled Whitebait Bowl”. This restaurant is owned by a whitebait merchant, which means the quality is superb. This soft, yet refreshing fish can only be tasted in Enoshima. The other speciality, “Raw Whitebait Bowl” is available in limited quantities and is not available during closed seasons or poor catch.

From 8 am to 11 am, the morning menu serves ham sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit, and drinks in one meal for a reasonable price.

The Enoshima Shrine is Enoshima’s guardian spirit. It started approximately 1500 years ago, and various priests are said to have visited the grounds to train their spirits as they listened to the gods.

The quiet shrine grounds in the morning are filled with refreshing air, making visitors want to breathe in and out. This spiritual place strengthens fortunes in wealth, work, and love in a perfect setting. Make sure to visit each ground to cleanse your body and spirit. The start of the spiritual realm is the scarlet torii gate. Walk 5 minutes, and you arrive at Hetsumiya. It worships “Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto”, where various celebrations take place. Clasp your hands and earn the fortunes from the Hotoke gods. The pavilions are built in great spirits, which makes you feel its history.

A short walk from Hentsumiya is the Nakatsumiya which worships “Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto”. The scarlet pavilion features a garden with its own Suikinkutsu. The giving grounds allows visitors to receive gifts. The nakatsumiya grounds has stone lanterns gifted from a Kabuki house during the Edo period (1603-1868). The pavilion ceiling has 154 pieces of flowers and bird paintings, and its colors are magnificent. The garden is open 9 am to 16 pm, free admission.

A natural hot spring, spa for a relaxing time for your body and mind.

The “Enoshima Island Spa” is a popular multi venue spa. Even people from outside the city will come to visit. The vast ocean in the front, with Mt.Fuji in the back is a superb location.

Near Sagami Bay, with a view of Mt. Fuji, the hot springs feature a high temperature bath, a middle temperature bath, and an artificial high concentration carbon bath. The high temperature bath gains its source from Enoshima’s only natural hot spring. It is sourced from 1500m underground, the sodium chloride bath is called the “Heat Bath”, and is perfect to preserve heat and moisture on the skin. After bathing, you will feel warm for a long time.

There are 11 spas both outdoors and indoors. Wear a swimsuit, as men and women can relax and heal themselves together. During April to September for a limited time, the outdoors infinity pool is open. Though crowded, if you avoid the afternoon to closing time, visitors can enjoy the pool without crowds.

Purchase fresh local fish from Sagami Bay at a special price

Enoshima’s coast has one of the most popular and effective feeding grounds for fish. There is a net placed at 1km outside the coast. Fishing boats that depart before dawn and come back to sell their catch in the “Katase Fishing Port”.

The golden mackerel is filled with delicious fat, the fat pingui is the most popular local fish. But there are other fishes such as whitebait, yellowtail, mackerel, and more each season. It has the highest catch in all of Sagami Bay. The fresh fish market next to the port sells fresh fish in a box, at a price 20-30% cheaper than markets in Tokyo.

When the market opens at 9 am, customers make a mad dash to the market. Some fishes are sold out within minutes, so make sure to queue up before opening time. Some fish have a complimentary service where staff members will slice up your fish to sashimi. Make sure to get some fresh fish with great flavors at a reasonable price in the early hours of Enoshima.

The Enoshima Fishermans Marche is open periodically. Kitchen cars will have their stall, and it will be busier than usual. Make sure to check their website for detailed hours and days.
