Enoshima is easily accessible from the Kanto region, making it perfect for a short trip. There are many visitors who spend half-day, but by staying, you will get to have a longer, and leisurely time on the island. Iwamotoro, a historic inn that has existed on Enoshima for 850 years since the Kamakura period. It has, and still is located in “Enoshima Benzaiten Nakamise Street” welcoming travelers, still continuing its traditions by making history.

The Japanese-style rooms give guests a view of the Shonan ocean and Hakone Renzan mountains. See the various ships traveling the ocean, and a flock of seagulls careening through the skies; this is the perfect seaside vacation. Some rooms are connected to an indoor pool open every July and August. Guests can enjoy their time without visiting the crowded oceans.

There are two hot springs. The first one, the “Benten Cave Bath” worships the Enoshima Shrine spirits, while the “Iwamotoro Rome Bathhouse” is a cultural tangible asset that has an ancient rome motif. These two bathhouses are truly unique, so sit back and enjoy a time of relaxation.

To finish your day, dinner is a Kaiseki Japanese dinner course including seafood caught straight from Sagami Bay, and taken to Katase Port. Stewed Alfonsino, grilled Shrimp, is included in a special plan that will savor many.

There is another historic inn in Enoshima other than the Iwamotoro. Shonan Enoshima Oryori Ryokan Ebisuya, favored by celebrities. Their services can only be provided by a historical inn. Make sure to use it in your 2 day stay at Enoshima.

The “Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden”, a tropical greenhouse where the Enoshima Sea Candle stands, features the “Enoshima Toro” which also takes place at “Enoshima Shrine”, and “Oiwayamichi Street”. Every July to August, there are approximately 1000 lanterns that illuminate each location, alongside light-based graphic art installations by professional space designers.

Once you cleanse your body and spirit with water, and pray at every pavilion, explore the “Nakatsumiya”, with it’s bright and highly saturated exterior. Open every 8am, the “Enoshima Koya” serves a breakfast only meal. Raw egg over rice with Alfonso Soup as sauce, and the Fisherman’s Soup using fish bones as stock is a delicacy. Come visit “Cafe Tobiccho Enoshima Yacht Harbor” to taste local seafood such as whitebait. After eating, explore Katase Harbor. Feel the morning sunshine and start your day off feeling refreshed!

Explore the “deep” Enoshima. Relaxing cafes galore!

There is more to see and play on the island. To feel the “deep” Enoshima, here are some recommended spots. The “Oiwayamichi Street” is a long street from around the top of the island that ends at Chigogafuchi Abyss, a rocky shore. There are various restaurants, and gift shops lined up to create a retro atmosphere. There are some places where visitors can have a great view of Sugamo Bay, so come look for your favorite places while eating some meals while walking around.

At the end of the island, the “Enoshima Iwaya” stands, where Kobo-Taishi and Nichiren are said to have meditated. This cave was created several thousands of years ago by wave currents, and is 152 m long, accessible by foot. Across the rocky walls, there are candlelights gleaming and illuminating stone statues, giving this place a spiritual atmosphere. Said to be connected to the ice caves of Mt. Fuji, this natural art in Enoshima is a must see.

Make sure to rest at a cafe while exploring the island. “Cafe Madu ENOSHIMA” is surrounded by trees, and its main storefront is a popular one in Aoyama, Tokyo. Located on a high plane, visitors can take in a beautiful ocean view from both table and terrace seats. Menus include curry and pasta made from local veggies and seafood. Crafted desserts, and crepes are available to go.
