On the vast 43,500m² premises, a shopping mall, movie complex, theater, amusement park and two hotels cluster. Its symbol, a 180m-long canal, crosses along the center of the space lined with colorful buildings.

Along with shopping and entertainment, just being there is delightful at Canal City Hakata. At the “Canal,” benches are laid out by the waters, making it a nice rest area. ”Sea Court” is a fun space with natural stones on the floor where water balls shoot out. “Crystal Canyon” is open from the 1st basement to 4th floor in the image of a canyon. Fountain shows are performed at “Sun Plaza Stage.” At night, water columns are lit up, creating a fantastic ambience in the ”Star Court.” Each of the five areas has a different design scheme.

    Canal City Hakata is a great mixed-use shopping complex to explore. It has not only all kinds of stores but also plenty of food options, making it easy to spend an entire afternoon there. During my last visit, an in-person fan event for a girl group happened to be taking place by the fountain on the first floor. The girls sang and danced onstage with lots of energy, while the fans below enthusiastically cheered them on with glow sticks. I don't usually follow celebrities and had only been passing by, but I couldn't help stopping to watch for quite a while.     Canal City Hakata is seriously fun to explore. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay for an hour, then somehow end up spending half the day there.

    Shopping, food, cafés, and hotels are all in one place, so when you get tired, you can just sit down and take a break somewhere. What surprised me most was the fountain show on the first floor. With the music, the atmosphere was awesome. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s relaxing just to sit nearby and zone out while watching the fountains.

    If you’re in Fukuoka and don’t know where to go, you really can’t go wrong here. Eat, shop, and take tons of photos all in one stop!
