Ayu Cuisine Shosui
A specialty ayu restaurant where you can enjoy catching ayu by hand while looking out over Lake Biwa.
Located in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Ayu Cuisine Shosui is a specialty restaurant overlooking Lake Biwa, known for its style of letting guests grill and eat live ayu themselves.
The ayu dishes are served in different styles in summer and fall. In summer, the courses center on salt-grilled ayu, with either five or three fish served. In fall, limited-course meals featuring roe-bearing ayu are available, so you can enjoy seasonal ayu dishes throughout the year. There are also courses with grilled eel, as well as skewers of Omi beef, chicken, and rabbit meat, plus a carp course, making it possible to sample Shiga Prefecture’s freshwater fish all at once.
From late April to late October, if you order the “Ayu Course,” you can also enjoy a hands-on ayu-catching experience in the stream on the property. Barbecue facilities are fully equipped along the shore of Lake Biwa, so you can grill and eat the ayu right there. Tents are also available to rent if needed for an additional fee. In addition, you can board the Gran Cruise Biwako resort sightseeing boat from Kitakomatsu Pier in front of the restaurant. It’s a great spot to take your time enjoying ayu cuisine along with the scenery of Lake Biwa.
