Kappo Ryokan Sakanaya Honten
Founded in the early 1870s! A kappo ryokan in Oarai where you can enjoy seasonal seafood.
Kappo Ryokan Sakanaya Honten is in Oarai, Higashiibaraki District, Ibaraki Prefecture. Founded in the early Meiji era, around 1870, this traditional inn has been run by the same family for seven generations. It is known for serving seasonal local fish from Ibaraki and regional specialties prepared with refined kappo cooking techniques.
The cuisine at Kappo Ryokan Sakanaya Honten is overseen by the seventh-generation owner. After training at a traditional Japanese restaurant in Tokyo, he handles everything from sourcing ingredients to preparing each dish. Thanks to trusted relationships built over many years, the inn is able to secure high-quality ingredients on a consistent basis. The carefully prepared dishes bring out the best in each ingredient. Its specialty, monkfish hot pot, is available only during winter from November to March. The plump monkfish and rich monkfish liver melt into the broth, creating a deeply satisfying flavor that warms you from the inside out.
The ryokan stands on Magari Matsu Shopping Street, an area that still preserves the atmosphere of an old port town and is popular with many visitors. Meals are also available for non-guests with advance reservations. Beyond enjoying an overnight stay or a meal, this ryokan also works well as a convenient base for sightseeing.
